Cherise Gary, raised in Hillside, New Jersey, is professionally known as the producer and DJ extraordinaire, UNIIQU3 (formerly known as DJ Uniique). She is one of the leading women of Jersey Club and a member of the pioneering Newark, New Jersey crew, Brick Bandits. UNIIQU3 began playing music at the age of seven. She began DJing in 2009, aged eighteen, and started producing in 2012.
Jersey Club grew out of Baltimore Club around 2001, retaining the layered kick drum triplets, heavy sub bass, and raw, high energy sequences. The sound was originally known as Brick City Club, after Newark’s nickname. This is where the Brick Bandits’ namesake is derived from. The sound grew beyond Newark and the name adapted to reflect the statewide movement. Dance battles emerged at the various parties across the state and thrive to this day.
The New Klassiks mixtape [LCTRAX005] is a collaborative release between UNIIQU3 & Lit City Trax. The mixtape works with the roots of Jersey Club which extend beyond the city to Baltimore, Philadelphia and Chicago (for example, Philadelphia Club’s DJ Dwizz’s “D Mac”) and pushes those sounds forward into new territories (UNIIQU3’s “D Mac” remix). The mixtape features and samples from Baltimore Club don Rod Lee, Brick Bandits’ own DJ Tameil, DJ Dru and Bleszt, Philly Club star DJ Dwizz amongst others, and includes collaborations with DJ Tricks, DJ 93rd, Mike Gip, DJ Fade, DJ Kiff & DJ Get Em.
