about

Born and raised in Tottenham, North London, Blay Vision has been setting trends in the studio. Blay Vision doubles up as both an MC and a producer much like predecessors Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, JME & Skepta. Having locked himself away in the studio, Blay has patiently been construction a plethora of beats and vocal tracks, that carve out his own unique lane.

Following on from the success of Blay Vision’s “The Vision” instrumental album, “Skeen” is the first single from Blay on J-Cush’s Lit City Trax, ahead of the release of his debut vocal album on the imprint later in the year. On “Skeen” we hear Blay go from the producer role, controlling the music, to MC, controlling the narrative. Blay’s gift as one of London’s leading beatmakers was clear on “The Vision”, and now with “Skeen”, Blay is offering insight into his recent vocal visions.

Much like Blay Vision’s productions, “Skeen” is a high-octane grime-trap hybrid, a perfect dichotomy of the UK and US urban sounds. The beat was produced by London Drill stalwart Mazza Beats whose production credits include Giggs, 67 & AJ Tracey.

“Skeen” is a modern day anthem, that contrasts against the dark, brooding Drill stylings of Mazza Beats’ with Blay’s raw and unmediated lyrical content. An unrelenting Blay unleashes an assault on the bravado that surrounds MC culture, making it clear he is not interested in crafting an illusion to popularise himself. Instead, by mocking charlatan MCs with dry sarcasm, while addressing the fakeness of the industry with his tight-knit delivery, Blay forges his own lane that promptly sets himself apart from the rest of the herd.

On the dark and dramatic introduction of “Skeen”, a brooding, delay-drenched Jamaican vocal sample calls out “Who’s a badman?” while Blay mocks “Mandem think that they’re rough?” setting an Blay’s incensed tone where he assaults the fake and phony with a direct determination. Skittering, gun-fire-esque hi-hats layered against furious kick drums and a tough, dynamic bass lead are the unrelenting driving forces of the track, complimented by a mysterious, alarm-like loop, that rings out in reverse throughout the track.

“Skeen” has been making noise on the pirates and is now making waves on the streets. Look out for a remix from P-Money dropping in the near future.
